Before I show you my outfit for Halloween; some facts about this festival and the dissemination of traditions on this day.
The word "Halloween" is the fusion of the phrase "All Hallow's Eve".
Come nasce la festa di Halloween?
Le origini di Halloween, sono antichissime, si presume che affondino le radici nella cultura celtica che il 31 ottobre celebrava la fine dell’anno. Per i Celti, infatti, alla fine di ottobre terminava ufficialmente la stagione calda ed iniziava la stagione delle tenebre e del freddo. Il lavoro nei campi era concluso, era il momento di mettere al sicuro raccolto e bestiame e lasciarsi andare ai meritati festeggiamenti.

I Celti credevano che alla vigilia di ogni nuovo anno, Samhain chiamasse a sé tutti gli spiriti dei morti. In questo giorno tutte le leggi dello spazio e del tempo erano come sospese e il velo che divideva il mondo dei vivi dal mondo dei morti si faceva più sottile, permettendo alle anime di mostrarsi, di comunicare con i viventi e di divertirsi alle loro spalle, facendo scherzi ed impaurendoli con le loro apparizioni.
What is Halloween?
The origins of Halloween are ancient and it is assumed that they sink their roots in Celtic culture that celebrated October 31 as the end of the year. For the Celts, in fact, at the end of October, officially ending the hot season and started the season of darkness and cold. The work in the fields was completed, it was time to secure crop and livestock and let go deserved celebrations.
Festivities were dedicated to "Samhain", the Lord of Death and the Prince of Darkness
The Celts believed that on the eve of every new year, Samhain called all the spirits of the dead. On this day all laws of space and time were suspended, as the veil that separated the world of the living from the dead became more subtle, allowing the souls of showing, communicating with the living and having fun behind them, making jokes and frightening with their appearances.
Perché si dice “Dolcetto o Scherzetto” a Halloween?
“Dolcetto o Scherzetto?” (trick or treat?), deriva probabilmente dal fatto che i Celti temevano gli scherzi degli spiriti, e così, per evitare di essere infastiditi durante la notte del 31 d’ottobre, tentavano di tenerli buoni con delle cibarie.
Why do we say "Trick or Treat" on Halloween?
"Trick or Treat?" Probably comes from the fact that the Celts were afraid of the jokes of the spirits, and so, to avoid being bothered during the night of 31 October, trying to keep them quiet with the groceries.
Perché ci si maschera?
L'abitudine di mascherarsi in occasione di Halloween deriva probabilmente dall'usanza celtica di indossare pelli di animali e maschere mostruose durante i riti di Samhain e dell'accensione del Fuoco Sacro, per spaventare gli spiriti e tenerli lontani dai villaggi.
Why does we dress up with masks?
The habit of dressing up on Halloween is probably derived from the custom of wearing Celtic animal skins and monstrous masks in rituals of Samhain and Power of the Holy Fire, to scare the spirits and keep them away from the villages.
Perché s’intagliano le zucche a Halloween?
La zucca veniva intagliata in volti minacciosi con dentro una candela per tenere lontani i morti che, vagando con le loro lanterne la notte del 31 ottobre in cerca di essere umani da portare nel regno dei trapassati, vedendo i volti spaventosi raffigurati nelle zucche poste davanti alle abitazioni, credevano che in quel luogo ci fossero solo altri spiriti.
Why do we carve pumpkins at Halloween?
The pumpkin was carved montrous faces with a candle inside to keep away the dead, that wandering with their lanterns on the night of October 31 in search of humans to take in the realm of the dead, seeing the faces depicted in the scary pumpkins placed in front of the homes, they believed that in that place there were only other spirits.
Come si è diffusa questa tradizione?
Tra il 1845 e il 1850, a causa di una malattia che devastò le coltivazioni di patate, gli Irlandesi emigrarono in America, portando con sé le loro usanze, tra cui anche quella di festeggiare Halloween.
Negli Stati Uniti Halloween ha perso i suoi significati religiosi e rituali, ed è diventata un'occasione per divertirsi e organizzare party. Sembra che ogni anno gli Americani spendano milioni di dollari in costumi, addobbi per festeggiare questa ricorrenza.
Whiy this tradition is so popular?
Between 1845 and 1850, due to a disease that devastated the potato crop, the Irish emigrated to America, bringing with them their customs, including that one to celebrate Halloween.
In the US, Halloween has lost its religious meaning and ritual, and it became an opportunity to have fun and to organize parties. It seems that every year Americans spend millions of dollars on costumes, decorations to celebrate this anniversary.
